The Sherlock Holmes Pub has more in common with the great detective than just the name: If you take a look at the menu, you will see that there are many strangely-named items on it: the Baker Street Irregulars Scampi Salad or Sherlock's Own 8oz Sirloin Steak are only a few of the dishes whose names derive from the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Additionally, there are all kinds of Sherlock memorabilia throughout the pub like a Persian slipper to hold Holmes' tobacco. Upstairs, you can find a complete and very detailed replica of Holmes' and Watson's apartment.
The pub's history goes back to as early as the 1880's when it was a small hotel called Northumberland Hotel. Later, it was known as Northumberland Arms and under this name it appeared in the Holmes story "The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor" since the Turkish bath that Holmes and Watson visited quite frequently was just next to the pub. The displays in the pub that you can study today originate from the Festival of Britain of 1951 when Marylebone Public Library decided to created an exhibition on Sherlock Holmes. After the exhibits had toured across the globe - they were even displayed in New York - the Sherlock Holmes Pub was able to purchase them.
The pub, which is opened from 8am to 11pm from Sunday to Thursday and from 8am to 12 midnight on Saturday, is located at 10 Northumberland Street. It can be reached easily using the Tube to Charing Cross Station.
